Tough data loss rules proposed in Britain

The British government is seriously considering implementing tougher data loss rules.

There have been a number of data losses recently in Britain and the government is pretty serious about this. With new technologies being developed it is becoming important to secure the personal data in both the public and private sectors

 

As per the new rules the information commissioner would be given more powers to enforce the Data Protection Act. It has also been proposed to increase the fines.

 

All companies, private or public are expected to show some evidence of their compliance with this new law.

KPMG report on public data loss

The first data loss barometer of KPMG has found out that the personal details of about 280 million people were lost in the past three years. 19% of the loss pertains to government organizations and 14% of the data is lost by the financial services. These personal financial details are targeted by organized criminals. Over 25% of loss is because of PC theft. KPMG has pointed out that the increased data security breaches are because of portable media which are not secured properly. Every possible business sector is affected by data loss and this has forced many organizations to concentrate on protecting the data.

Public data loss is becoming more and more common these days where the information related to the public is lost. Recent analysis shows that more than 400 government laptops has been stolen in the past five years. The government is trying to build various databases to automate the functions of the government. In this scenario, it is essential to protect the data from data loss.

Enhanced mobility of data as well as data storage has increased security threat, but the government is far behind from taking steps to protect the data. It is the duty of the government to protect the personal data of the citizens, the loss of which will cause serious legal issues.
